My Journey to What Matters

This past week has been very interesting in many ways. First of all, I have never spent this amount of time on the phone (and not wanting to hang up). I know some of you have been in those moments, and those of you who can read between the lines will understand why lol

To tell you the truth, I don’t know where to start. Let me begin by this. I had a very interesting phone call yesterday morning from George from LifeSuccess Publishing. We had a 10 minutes conversation that got me so excited. It has been a while now since I have been receiving great feedback about my blog. I didn’t realize that so many people read it. I only began writing it for fun. Many people (including my mom) told me that I should write a book.

As I was browsing through the Internet, I came across a message from one of the top speakers in the world. He spoke about how he could help people to write and promote their own books. (coincidence? I don’t think so). He talked about a company called LifeSuccess Publishing; needless to say I went online to see what they did. A few weeks later, I found myself on the phone with George who explained to me how they could help. For those of you who are fans of the Journeyman Stories, stay tune. Starting from May 1st, 2010, I will be writing my first book (and thank you for the standing ovation).

That is not the only news of the week. On Thursday, I was part of the International Speech Contest at Toastmasters. Preparing my speech was initially difficult because I had little inspiration from which to draw. Then, I thought about a conversation I had this week with a lady who I am mentoring (part of the work I do). I remembered relating to her story about what she was going through because I had also experienced the very same things a couple years back. And this became the inspiration for my speech.

The Title of my speech was “Our Life Matters”. Yes it does. When we go through tough times, most of the time we do not understand why (and we do not care about the why, we just want to get out of it). But with time, we will see the big picture. If I did not go through the things I went through, I would not have been able to help this lady, or even write a blog which (I hope) is inspiring most of you.

Our life really matters. Next time you meet someone on the street remember that just your smile could change a thing or two in her/his life (provided that you have a great smile lol). A word of encouragement can make a day in the life of our fellows. A blog a week could result in a bestseller book and make you rich (I am talking about myself of course lol).

Moral of the story? Do you want your life to matter? Make sure you have a nice smile.

Always a pleasure

My Journey to the Ultimate Dream

The last few days have been full of surprises. Some good, some others not so good. That is the beauty of life. It is unpredictable. Whenever I am in a place where I think I have it all figured out, life has a way of putting me right in my place if you know what I mean. Now, all I have to do is enjoy the ride and be just an observer of what is happening (I think I missed my career. I should have been a philosopher, what do you think?)

As far as I can remember, I have always had big dreams. I remember when I was coaching Basketball, I used to tell my players that I would bring them to play in the Olympics one day. At that time our team was so poor that we had one uniform (we were praying not to have two games back to back otherwise we would play with no uniform). We used to go to the games so early because we relied on rides from strangers on the street (as you can see, we were ready to go to the Olympics lol). But I am glad I had those dreams because along the way I accomplished things that I thought were impossible (I should be in the adidas advertisements).

Since last year, I have been subscribing to a Tony Robbins` program. Each month, I receive from him a DVD, a CD and a workbook. Tony started a series of interviews in which he talks with business people who have made it big (I think I am the next one on the show, I am just waiting for his invitation). The testimonies are great. The last guy on the show made $1 million in 24 hours. I couldn't believe it when I heard it. And he is in his thirties (that gave me hope because I am still in my twenties lol).

After watching a couple of interviews, I started noticing some trends. All of these people have a struggle-victory story. In addition, after they have made all the money they want, they found out that it was not about the money (funny isn't it?). Instead, it is really about who you become along the way that matters. Another thing I learned was that for them to succeed, they had to put other people first. They add value to their customers. This is what Zig Ziggler meant when he said that “For you to get what you want, you just have to help other people get what they want” ( I am paraphrasing here). What a great concept!

I am really glad I am learning these things. I used to dream about getting a big car, a big house, a big wife (just kidding). Why are you laughing? That would be great too. But recently, I learned from a great teacher that all those things we want have the same purpose... What is that purpose you ask...well..It's to make us happy. I think he is right. Just ask yourself why you want the things that you want. You will find out that it is because you think that they will make you happy. That is what I call “The Ultimate Dream”. We just want to be happy.

I had a huge relief when I heard that. Because, I do not have to wait until I get those things I want for me to be happy. I can chose to be happy now regardless of what is happening and be thankful of what I have. Trust me on that one. Try it yourself and you will see how magical it is. The funny part is that when we chose to be happy in the moment, all those things that we were looking for come to us so easily (except for the big wife. I am still waiting lol).. I have never been this busy in my business (yes I have a business but I won't tell you what it is unless you insist). But all the work comes to me effortlessly. I am not bragging. On the contrary, I am humbled by this because I know from where it comes. And as Zig Ziggler said, for me to be happy, all I have to do is to make other people happy.

So if happiness is your ultimate dream, like it is mine, then starting today, find someone and make him/her happy.

Moral of the story? Do you want to realize all your big dreams? Just keep reading my blog and you will be happy.

My Journey to Texas

Have you ever been in a situation when it seems that you are in a dream? That was me in March 2009.

For about 6 months I was part of Toasmasters International. For those who do not know Toastmasters, it is a club that trains people to speak in public. Public speaking has been one of my passions lately and I felt I could do it as a profession (I used to be shy but now I'm not).

Being part of the club, I received their monthly magazine. I must admit that I rarely read it (procrastination maybe, but I'm getting over it). But one day, while flipping through it, I noticed that there was a company offerring special training to people who would like to become professional public speakers (and I was one of them). Before you knew it, I was on their website. On the main page was a video of one of the top speakers in the world (that is my opinion, but it is so because the world does not know of me as yet lol). This guy said that he had received this training , and that was enough for me. On the website, there were hundreds of well known speakers who went through the same training. I knew I had to do it. No. I was born to do it. That is how I felt !

I completed the form on the website without even knowing what I was doing (and why). Thirty minutes later I received a call from one of the top trainers of the company. I could not believe it. These people were so fast. He told me he had read, and was impressed by, my profile. (you would be impressed too). He highly recommended the training. That was in the month of January and the next one would be in March. I was pumped until he quoted me the price. I almost choked when I heard it. How in the world was I going to come up with that kind of money? I understood why they were successful. For that kind of money they must be giving some good stuff.

I found myself saying to the guy: “Yeah, I will certainly be there. You can write my name in ”. After I hung up the phone, I was like “what have I just done!!!!” I had to come up with the money. My first reaction was this: if I have to go to Dallas Texas (that is where the training facility was located ), what should be my first step? I thought I could ask for some time off at work. And that is what I did. I asked for the entire month of March off. So, now, I had no excuse. I had the time to do it and I had the..., no I did not have the money.

During that time,I was listening to an audio by the same speaker I told you about (the one who was on the website). In his teaching, he was saying “see yourself already in possession of the thing desired and you will have it”. So I started seeing myself in Dallas Texas. I mean, I could see the buildings, the airport, the friends I would meet there, the special training I would receive, the Sun (yeah, it was during the Canadian winter and I knew Texas would be sunny). All of a sudden, I started feeling like the money was there. I could see it. I could see myself buying the plane ticket and flying to Dallas.

One day, as I was picking up my mail, I saw a brown envelop. I did not know what it was. I opened it and noticed that it was from a bank. It was a bank statement. This statement reminded me that I had been putting money away for years; something I had forgot about. Needless to say I realized that I had money available. This reminded me of what the speaker had said on the audio ....he said that when we keep visualizing what we want, we will get “a message” asking us to take action. The message could be of any sort. It could be something you hear on the radio, something you read on billboard, or mail you receive. For me, it was the mail.

So I took action and withdrew the money from the bank. I flew to Dallas and saw the buildings, the airport, the friends, the special training and the Sun just the way I “saw” them before while visualizing. .....who would have thought! What about the training, you may ask. It was beyond what I had imagined. Stay tuned to your local channels you may see me speaking in public in the near future.

Moral of the story? Do you want to go to Texas? Have a dream of speaking in public and you will receive a call saying that your profile is impressive.

Always a pleasure

My Journey to the right people at the right time

This is one of the few times that I write a blog in a rush. I am taking a trip for work and I have to be there in a few minutes. Don't worry. I will try my best not to rush my ideas (how can we do that?)

Last week I went with my friend Paul to do a presentation for a new immigrants organization on "How our thoughts affect our reality ". It was a great presentation (can I get a standing ovation please?). Before we left, we made sure that we gave each person one of the quotes that has inspired Paul and me over the years. The name of the quote is: “Everything happens for a reason”. I guess many of you have read it. If not, I should get a commission from the person who wrote it .....unfortunately, that person is unknown.

In that quote, there is a statement that says: " Sometimes people come into your life and you know right away that they were meant to be there, they serve some sort of purpose, to teach you a lesson or to help you figure out who you are or who you want to become ”. I think this is true at so many levels.

There have been many people who came into my life who have helped me in a way that I will never forget. And they were there at the right time. It seems like it was by design (I believe it is). I can think of many, but I will start with the most important one .

This lady is now in her sixties . She has been through a lot of challenging times but she made it through. She kept a positive attitude, and I think that very few people could endure what she went through. Regardless, she did something that nobody will ever do for me (and what an amazing job: she gave birth to a genious). As you may have guessed. I am talking about my mom. Don't you think she is amazing? I mean, look at me! Aren't you looking at a masterpiece? Lol

I can't help but think about people who came through my path at the right time. How about the guy who paid for my flight to Canada when I was desperate to get it (three days before my trip I had no money to pay for my ticket )? How about the businessman who sponsored my entire project to bring Canadian journalists to my home country (see my blog on my journey to my first major project)? My friend Marius bought me lunch for an entire year when I had no job (how about that one?). The list goes on

As I was thinking about all of this, I thought about a friend of mine back home who told me months ago that he had lost his job. As I thought about him, I felt that I wanted to do something for him . I decided to send him some cash. When I called him today, he was very surprised for many reasons. First of all, he was surprised because it had been almost six months since we last spoke. Above all, I called him when he was at church (I was so sorry to interrupt God), and as he was praying, he thought He told me that he had decided to send me an e-mail after church just to see how I was doing. And then I called (coincidence???. I don't think so). I told him about how I wanted to help him. I could hear all the emotions on the other side of the line.

I have been blessed to meet the right people at the right time, but today I was the right person at the right time for my friend. And you know what? It feels great !

Moral of the story? Would you like to meet the right people at the right time? Just go to church, you will think of me and I will give you a call.

My Journey to the Legend (Part Two)

For those who are familiar with my blog (by the way, I am overwhelmed by your comments), you may have seen the trend. I often talk about basketball, radio, movies and books. These are my passions. As much as I would love to talk about girls, I feel I am not really qualified to talk about the subject lol (trust me on that one!).

So, here is another radio story

At the end of my contract with my first radio station in Toronto , I took a long leave of absence from radio; mainly because of the project in which I was involved (see “My Journey to the Big One”). I really missed radio during that time. There is something special about putting on those headphones in front of the microphone listening to the music waiting for the time to go on air. Priceless.

Okay, back to the story. My friend Marius, who is a big fan of “The Alchemist” and my blog as well, sent me an e-mail last week letting me know that if I did not publish a book on my blogs, he would do it himself. Marius has such a sense of humor and I am glad he is my friend (I should write an entire blog on how he has been such a blessing in my life).

After reading his e-mail, I took some time and thought about all the times when “the whole world conspired in helping me to achieve what I wanted” and I couldn’t help thinking about how I returned to being on air.

If I am not mistaken, it was in 2006. I received a number of e-mails mentioning that there would be a new radio station in Toronto broadcasting online. I thought it was a great idea, but I felt it was not for me. But friends who knew my passion for radio kept asking me why I was not involved in the project.

Finally, I decided to contact the owner of the radio, and he told me that he heard much about me and he wanted to contact me (I think I am a celebrity who does not know that he is one lol, what do you think?). After talking with him, I thought it was a great project.

He told me that he would like to hire me as a journalist for his radio. I did not exactly share this idea. I mentioned to him that I would rather do my independent production and have the station broadcast my shows. We had a deal.

You must be thinking that I had this huge production company with all the equipment to do the shows. I had nothing. Did you hear that? Nothing! Not even an idea of what would be the topics of my shows.

And then “the whole world conspired in helping me to achieve what I wanted”. By that time, a long-time friend of mine with whom I did many projects back home had moved to Toronto . I told him about the idea of doing our own radio shows, and he was ready to go. He told me that he had bought a new computer, so we could use it to edit the shows. It was a great idea and I was very excited about it. Did I tell you that we did not have the editing software? And if we had, I had no idea how to use it. Besides, we had no microphone (please don’t laugh at me).

Things started to move so fast. A lady who used to work at the same radio station I worked for back home told me that she knew how to use the editing software. The owner of the online radio station mentioned to me that he would give me a recorder, a microphone and the software. I took a thirty minutes training on how to use the software (either my friend was a good teacher or I was simply a genius). I was ready to go.

We did around fifteen shows before the radio station shut down. I thought my adventures with radio production were over until I was contacted by my former radio station asking me if I was interested in doing a show with them. I asked them if I could do it from home, to which they said yes.

This is my second season with them, and since then I have received a brand new computer, brand new microphone and an up-to-date editing software, all of that for….free (friends showed up out of the blue with those gifts).

I did not buy any of the equipment. Now you can listen to me every Saturday at 10 am ( Toronto time). I won’t even mention the radio station. You will have to insist for me to give it to you lol

Moral of the story? Not much. Just read “The Alchemist” and you will receive a free computer.

Always a pleasure
