She was growing suspicious with time. All those text messages, e-mails and phone calls that I was hiding from her got her to finally asking me: “what's going on with you?” I didn't want to lie to my wife, so I told her the truth: “My sister-in-law is preparing your baby shower”. For some of you, this may be breaking news (no I don't work for CNN...). Yes, we are expecting a baby boy in the month of June.
So, now she knew what was going on. But what I did not tell her was the day and the venue of the event. She thought it would be in the month of June, and she was a little bit worried because she thought that we did not have a big enough place to hold a party. To which I responded: “Don't worry. We live near a park that can hold hundreds of people”. She thought I was crazy.
We had only a few weeks to prepare, my sister-in-law took charge of everything. She should be an event planner. I was really impressed. The only thing I did was secure the venue. The rest was in her hands. She had a few friends helping her and they did an amazing job.
The day was set. It was going to happen on May 5 (which was this last Saturday). My wife had no clue that it was THE day. I had a 3 hour meeting in the morning (luckily it was at the same place the party was going to happen). My sister-in-law and I had a plan. I was going to leave the house at 3pm (pretending that I did not finish my morning meeting), go there and meet her to get ready for the guests, then, around 5pm, she would go to pick up my wife so that they can go “shopping”. The plan worked perfectly.
They were supposed to come and meet me at my “meeting” place to get some cash so that they can go “shopping”. Little did she know that she would find a room full of people, waiting for her, with cameras in their hands to capture the surprise. Oh yes. It worked. She was shocked. She couldn't believe it. She had to sit for five minutes to breath a little. The surprise was perfect. We had tons of gifts from friends, so much that we are still speechless. She cannot stop saying “God is good”.
What about the party? You may ask. Then my question to you is this: Which one? The main party, or the after party? Lol. We went home at 9pm, few friends came over and the party went on until...2am!!! We still have few drinks in the fridge if some of you want to come. There is also food left over, but please don't touch it because it belongs to me...lol
Once again I was reminded of the value of true friendship. Friends have been so amazing for us. We will never take them for granted (and I think nobody should). My only regret is that I may have omitted to invite some of you. Either it's because I did not have your contact information, or simply because I forgot. I hope you will forgive me.
So, if you have great friends, please don't take them for granted. Cherish them, and cherish every moment you spend with them. They are a true treasure.
Moral of the story? Do you want to surprise your loved one? Just pretend that you have a long meeting and my sister-in-law will take care of the rest.
Always a pleasure
